CITY GUIDE COLOGNE

Private jet charter and flights to Cologne

Founded by the Romans back in 38 BC, Cologne was almost wiped out during the Second World War. Rising from the ashes in spectacular style, today this ancient western German city on the River Rhine is packed with historic and cultural attractions, but also nurtures a thriving contemporary art scene and has a distinctly cosmopolitan vibe. Get a fast qoute with Air Charter Service and charter a private jet today.

Exploring Cologne is like jumping into a history book. In addition to the city’s beautiful churches and ancient Roman arch, over 30 museums cover subjects ranging from the Roman Empire to chocolate. Peruse European art at the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, explore the birthplace of Eau de Cologne on a guided tour of the Fragrance Museum and admire sporting memorabilia (including one of Michael Schumacher’s Formula One race cars) at the German Sports and Olympic Museum. There’s even a mustard museum, where you can learn how the popular condiment is produced and buy unusual versions to take home.

The city’s most famous landmark is its iconic cathedral, Kölner Dom, a magnificent structure with 157-metre filigree twin spires and medieval stained-glass windows that was once the world’s tallest building. Venture inside to discover spectacular interiors and the bejewelled Shrine of the Three Kings, which is said to hold the remains of the three monarchs who followed the star to Bethlehem and draws pilgrims from around the world. Straddling the river adjacent to the cathedral is another legendary sight, the Hohenzollern Bridge. Built in the early 1900s, it’s a renowned romantic spot where lovers affix ‘love locks’ before throwing the keys into the river below as a symbol of their ardour.

Cologne’s Old Town is small but well worth exploring; stroll down narrow streets lined with pastel-hued houses and admire the impressive architecture of the Groß Sankt Martin church. If you prefer more modern attractions, the city boasts a vibrant contemporary art scene and it feels as though there’s a new gallery at every turn, with world-class collections featuring the likes of Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso. For those who fancy a spot of retail therapy, the Belgian Quarter is a hip neighbourhood scattered with fantastic vintage fashion shops and trendy cafés and bars; while Schildergasse and Hohe Strasse – Cologne’s answers to Oxford Street and Regent Street – offer a more mainstream high-street shopping experience.

You’ll find a variety of restaurants in Cologne when hunger strikes, from Michelin-starred fine dining and cross-culture haute cuisine to traditional eateries serving bratwurst, sauerkraut and other German classics. For delicious cuisine on the go, stop by the Meet & Eat Market on Rudolfplatz Square, where stalls sell a range of freshly-prepared street food. To truly soak up the city’s friendly, laidback vibe, pop into one of the many brewpubs and beer gardens for a pint of the local beer, Kolsch.
