• Passengers 8

As the most spacious and longest-range jet in the CJ family, the Cessna Citation CJ4 is a great option for short- and mid-range flights.

About this aircraft

  • The Cessna Citation CJ4 was announced in 2006 as a longer, upgraded variation of the CJ3 and CJ3+.
  • It typically seats six or eight passengers, while the enclosed lavatory can be used as an extra seat if needed. An additional passenger can sit in the cockpit with a single pilot if the aircraft is owned, but this option isn’t available for charters.
  • With a range of over 4,000 km, the CJ4 can fly non-stop from Houston to New York and from London to any major city in Europe.
  • The hold has space for approximately five suitcases.
  • After delivering over 300 CJ4s, Cessna began producing the CJ4 Gen2 in 2022 with a more modern cabin and better performance.

Versatile and cost-effective, the Cessna Citation CJ4’s range, passenger capacity and price make it a leading light jet.

Interior design

The Citation CJ4’s cabin typically comes in two configurations. The standard layout seats six passengers with an extended galley in the front, while the more popular ‘couch’ layout seats eight with a double divan. A further passenger can sit in the lavatory at the rear if required.

Below is a standard configuration for the CJ4 and CJ4 Gen2.

Interesting facts to learn before you fly

  • The Citation CJ4 is approved for single-pilot operation.
  • Seats recline completely flat, providing a comfortable place for an inflight nap.
  • The cabin is slightly smaller than that of a Pilatus PC-24 or Embraer Phenom 300.
  • The CJ4 Gen2 uses long-range cruise power to fly almost 4,000 km non-stop, getting passengers from San Diego to Orlando and New York to Phoenix.
  • The CJ4 and CJ4 Gen2 can land at short-runway airports like Lugano in Switzerland and Saint-Tropez on the French Riviera.

Technological features

The Cessna Citation CJ4 is powered by two FJ44-4A fanjets, each producing 3,621 lbs of thrust and propelling the jet to 45,000 ft. The aircraft’s flight deck features Rockwell Collins’ ProLine 21 avionics, hazard detection system and award-winning high-definition cabin management system.

A stretched version of the CJ3, the Cessna Citation CJ4 was announced in 2006 and the first prototype flight took place in 2008. The aircraft received FAA certification in 2010 and over 300 CJ4s were delivered before Cessna launched the upgraded CJ4 Gen2 in 2022.

Cessna was founded in 1927 by Clyde Cessna and Victor Roos. It was originally called the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company, but Roos’ name was dropped after he resigned just one month into the partnership and sold back his interest to Cessna.

Headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, the company specialised in producing small piston-powered planes and business jets. After becoming one of the world’s biggest general aviation producers, it was bought by General Dynamics in 1985 and by Textron in 1992. In March 2014, Cessna stopped operating as a subsidiary company and joined Beechcraft and Hawker as one of the three distinct brands produced by Textron Aviation.

Depending on its age, a Cessna Citation CJ4 can cost between $7.5 million and $10 million (USD). The starting price of a CJ4 Gen2 is about $11.5 million.
